Dear referees,                                                                                                                                                                               July 2011

Cheques: First of all, thank you so much for your help and contribution to the club for the first part of the season. I have already finished the paperwork for your cheques and I did forward it to you and to the treasurer. As soon as I receive the cheques I will put them in the mail. Meanwhile, you need to let you know if you find any mistake in my calculations before hand and that’s why I sent you the records.

Statistics: The statistician works every night till late to make sure that the information is received, recorded for club’s record and then forwarded to the paper so the parents can enjoy reading their kids name in the paper. You should be very understanding of her and my situation. We work so hard all weekend and every night. It is very much appreciated if you respect the deadlines to report so we don’t end up burning midnight oil. Also, please make sure when you report to her you include names only. Please remember that she will reply to confirm that she received your report (but ONLY if you emailed your scores, not if you phoned them, only if you emailed them). Last but not least, I know at the end of the day we are all tired and sometimes frustrated depending on the way the game went, however, I do expect you to be very respectful and polite when you deal with her or anyone else for that matter.

Coaches: I had a couple of coaches complaining that their ref was not polite and could have done a better job on the field. So, please be nice and polite because at the end of the day those coaches are volunteers who are there for their kids and in front of their kids so you have to be very polite and sensitive towards their circumstances. On the other hand, we had an assistant coach who was very rude to one ref. I would like to thank the ref for reporting to me right away and I would like to thank the Head Coach for dealing with it in a promptly manner.

Mini Soccer: I did tell you in my previous email but I must tell you again: At half time teams need to switch ends no matter what age group. I noticed that the referees at Trent for U5 and U6 are not enforcing the rule. Please follow FIFA and club rules. Also, please look sharp: Make sure that you are tucking your shirt in, wearing your badge and pull up your socks. You MUST look official if you want to impose respect.

Full Field: In full field soccer, most of the calls inside the penalty area end up in a Penalty Kick. There are very limited cases when you can award an indirect free kick (for example the keeper delaying the ball for more then six seconds, or picking up the ball deliberately after it was passed back to him from one of his team mates). In each case you need to explain your call. If there is body contact though during an infringement then the kick must be a direct free kick which being in the penalty area will result in a Penalty Kick. If the kick though is indirect free kick then the players still need to stand the required distance from the ball (10m) or on the goal line if the ball is too close to the goal. Also, if for some special reasons you need to drop the ball, always pick a neutral place (not inside the penalty area). Even if you were close to the penalty box then bring the ball at the edge of it, rather then dropping it inside. So, please be extra careful with the calls in the penalty area.

Yours in soccer,

Fevri Pazari

Club Head Referee
