Whitby All-Star Tournament

The Peterborough Youth Soccer Club U12 Boys All-Star team finished their first season
together by winning the Whitby All-Star tournament this past weekend. In the round robin
they opened with a hard fought 2-1 win against Oshawa and in the second game they cruised
to a 7-0 win over Ajax. That put them in first place after the round robin and a berth in
the finals. In the finals they faced their archrivals Markham. They had faced Markham
twice this season and lost both games, one in the Championship finals and once in the
semi-finals. Peterborough held a 1-0 edge late into the game until Markham scored with 5
minutes remaining in the game. The game ended in a tie with penalty kicks looming.
Peterborough missed their first two kicks and Markham made their two. It was a tense
moment for the coaches and the parents. But the Peterborough players did not back down.
They made their next three kicks and Markham faltered by missing two of their next three
kicks. That left the game still tied after penalty kicks and it was time for the sudden
death kicks. Markham made their next kick but so did Peterborough. Then in the seventh
round the Markham penalty kick was stopped by a brilliant save by Peterborough goalie and
captain Jakob Payne. The next Peterborough player, Jessie Ward, stepped up and volunteered
to take the next kick and calmly drilled the ball into the back of the net. Cheers and
tears followed and our fantastic season was over but not soon forgotten. The Peterborough
team was so dedicated that they practiced long after the sun had set and the coaches had
to drag them off a dark pitch. The members of the team are, front row (L-R) James
Hook-Wood, Moises Hernandez, Michael Barrett, Ben Hargreaves, Jakob Payne, Owen Godfrey,
Jesse Ward, Graeme Barrett (practice goalie and manager) back row(L-R)Head Coach Steve
